Last month, World Immunization Week highlighted the importance of routine vaccinations in the health of children. In Kenya, Lions celebrated WIW as shown in the photos throughout this post (provided by the Lions). The below guest blog post is an account from Lion Shehzan Luhar, District GMT Coordinator and Region Chairperson – Kenya Region A:

Lions Clubs in Kenya celebrated the World immunization Week from April 22 – 28, 2014. Lions from all major cities and towns celebrated the week-long event by helping out at various health institutions and vaccination centres.

The Lions of Nairobi, Kenya sponsored the National Launch which was held at the Kibera Health Centre on April 22. More than 400 Mothers with children below the age of 5 years attended the vaccination camp and post natal check for their children. The Lions took this opportunity to witness vaccinations as well as educate mothers on the importance of immunizing their children.

The Lions also partnered with the M.P. Shah Hospital in Nairobi where a joint launch was held in the presence of Government and Lion Dignitaries. The Launch was very well covered by the local TV channels. The hospital and the Lions promised to work together to sponsor free immunization and education to the mothers both expecting and those with children below 5 years.

On Sunday, April 27, the Lions also organised a Mega Medical event at the Mukuru Educational and Health Centre, where they encouraged all mothers with children from the nearby slum areas to attend for immunization as well as educational sessions on the importance of immunization. The Mukuru Centre also has a very large congregation of churchgoers on Sunday and after the service, they were all invited for the educational talk by doctors from the Kenyatta National Hospital.

With the support of Lions around the world, World Immunization Week 2014 was a great success. Lions raised more than US$800,000 for measles vaccinations in the month of April, which will be brought to a total of US$1.3 million with the assistance of matching funds coming from the Oswal family. Together, we are making a difference and improving health for children in need. Thank you for your support!
